about.
I am Joana Vogdt, a director and screenwriter. Telling stories with empathy and situational humor is my passion.
Born in 1981 in Frankfurt am Main, I grew up in Mecklenburg and Hamburg. My journey has taken me through Germany, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, the USA, and Russia.
After studying at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and La fémis as part of the Atelier Ludwigsburg-Paris, I went to New York as a trainee. I then worked with Pallas Film and Twenty Twenty Vision on numerous feature films. In the following years, I gained experience as a producer, script reader, dramaturg, and assistant director, including work for Wim Wenders.
In 2010, I began filming documentaries for ARTE/ZDF—ranging from programs to portraits to reports. Additionally, I completed the Masterclass Non-Fiction at IFS Cologne.
In 2018, I received a scholarship from the DrehbuchWerkstatt at HFF Munich and subsequently worked as a writer in several writers’ rooms.
In 2020, my two short film directorial debuts, “Nachtbesuch” and “Fließende Grenze,” premiered. Both films were shown at numerous festivals and received multiple awards.
In 2023, my first television feature film, “Ostsee für Sturkköppe,” was shown at the Hamburger Filmfest.
In 2024, I became a mother and directed an episode for the successful TV series “Nord bei Nordwest” (to be broadcast in 2026).
Currently I am developing my feature film debut.
